Gas Fitting Jesmond

Gas fitting covers every job where gas is in the picture: cooktops and heaters, bayonet points, new lines, leak repairs and compliance testing. All of it is licensed work, quoted before we start.

One rule above all. DIY is not just risky with gas, it's illegal. Every joint gets made and tested by a licensed fitter, and the full range of what we do lives on the Jesmond home page.

Gas jobs we take on

The list below covers the calls that fill most of the gas diary. If yours isn't here, ring and ask, because licensed gas work is licensed gas work.

Cooktops and ovens

We install and connect gas cooktops and wall ovens, run the supply to the appliance position, and pressure-test the full line before you put a pot on a burner for the first time.

Barbecue bayonets and outdoor points

A bayonet on the patio means no more bottles carted back and forth. We run a compliant line from the meter to the outdoor point and test it before the hose clicks in.

Heaters and gas heating

A heater that sat idle over summer often won't light cleanly on the first cold night. We service, reconnect or install gas heaters with a flue check and a tested supply.

New lines and extensions

Renovating a kitchen or adding an appliance where there's never been gas? We size and run new pipework from the meter through the building to the point of use.

Leak detection and repair

We isolate the supply, trace the leak back to the joint or run responsible, remake it properly, and prove the line holds pressure before the gas goes back on.

Appliance disconnections

Selling a gas appliance, moving one, or switching fuel? We disconnect and cap the line so the open end is safe, sealed and documented rather than a live stub behind a cupboard.

Testing is the whole job

A gas line is only as good as its weakest joint, which is why testing carries more weight on gas than anywhere else in the trade. Three things happen before we call any job done:

  • The full run goes under pressure, so a weak joint shows itself while we're standing there with the tools
  • Every appliance gets a burn check, because a flame burning wrong is a fault even when the pipework is sound
  • Flues and ventilation get looked at, since where the fumes go matters as much as where the gas does

Skip any of those and you haven't finished a job, you've left one hoping.

Gas lines in an older suburb

The housing here is mostly post-war and mid-century stock: brick-veneer, weatherboard and fibro homes built long before anyone thought about a barbecue point.

Older runs deserve a look whenever we open a wall near a gas line:

  • Ageing joints behind plaster don't announce themselves until the smell does, so we test the existing run as well as the new connection
  • Student rentals and apartment infill near the university need fresh, compliant runs; census figures counted 410 dwellings approved across the five years before the last survey

A shiny new appliance on a tired line isn't a finished job, so the whole run gets proven before we pack up.

Food tenancies count too. A cafe lives on its cooktop, and a faulty connection stops trade, not just dinner. Our commercial plumbing work covers those shops, and the gas side gets the same test discipline as a home job.

Do not wait on this

When gas can't wait

A gas smell is not a keep-an-eye-on-it problem. Get the space aired out, leave flames and switches alone, and ring us straight away. Call immediately if:

  • You can smell gas indoors or anywhere near the meter, bottles or appliances
  • A flame burns yellow and lazy instead of blue and steady
  • You hear hissing near a line, joint or appliance connection
  • A pilot light keeps going out for no obvious reason

If water is involved in the same urgent fault, our emergency plumbing page explains how we triage the serious calls, and the hot water hub covers the gas systems behind your showers.

Gas fitting questions, answered

Can I do my own gas work?

No. In NSW every gas installation, alteration and repair must be done by a licensed fitter. Unlicensed work is illegal, and an untested joint is how a house fills with fumes.

How do I know if I have a gas leak?

Rotten-egg odour near an appliance, a hiss at a joint, or a flame burning yellow instead of blue. Notice any of those, shut the supply if it's safe, and call us.

Can you run a new gas line to a barbecue bayonet?

Yes. We size the run from your meter, route the pipe through the wall or along an external path, fit the bayonet and pressure-test the lot before the first sausage.

Can you install a gas appliance I bought myself?

Usually, yes. We check the appliance suits your supply and the position, connect it with a tested joint and a proper flue where needed, and confirm it burns correctly before we go.

Do you pressure-test the line after every job?

Every time. Testing under pressure is how a fitter knows a line is sound, and it's the difference between a compliant job and a hopeful one. You get the result, not our word.

Do you do gas work in rental properties?

We do, and student turnover near the university keeps rentals changing hands. Tenants, owners and property managers can all make the call, and the quote goes to whoever pays the bill.
