For an electric system, look at the hot water switch near the unit and at the switch it runs from in the house. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and ring us.

Look at the pilot light
On a gas unit the flame window tells you straight away whether the burner is lit. Follow the relighting steps on the panel once.

Look for water under the tank
A wet base or a steady drip from the relief pipe points to tank failure, and no switch will fix that.

Check the unit's age
The manufacture date is usually on a sticker or stamped plate. Past about ten years, weigh that into any repair decision.
Leave the rest alone. Open gas components, drained tanks and makeshift wiring are licensed-plumber territory, because hot water systems mix gas, power and pressurised water.
